Master Artist and Apprentice Grant

The purpose of the Master Artist and Apprentice in Traditional Native Art program is to support and encourage the continuation of traditional art forms of Alaska Natives.

An individual may apply for a Master Artist and Apprentice (MAA) grant for serious study with a recognized Master Artist in a traditional Alaska Native art form.

The Apprentice to whom or on whose behalf the grant is made may use the grant to study any traditional Alaska Native art form, including visual arts, crafts, music, dance, storytelling, and singing.

An applicant for a Master Artist and Apprentice grant may request a grant for up to $2,000, and the grant recipient is not required to provide a match. A grant is limited to payment of the fees of the Master Artist, and when necessary, costs of supplies and travel essential to the Apprenticeship, up to $500 of the total grant. If payment of a grant is approved, the Council will pay to the Apprentice up to $500 for supplies and travel costs if needed, and up to $1,500 to the Master Artist for the instruction and training they provide the Apprentice. If supplies and travel costs are already covered, the Master Artist can be paid a total of $2,000 for their instruction time, knowledge, and skills.

To qualify as an Apprentice, one must be a resident of the State; be at least 18 years of age; have demonstrated experience in the traditional Alaska Native art form for which the individual proposes to serve as an apprentice; must have located a Master Artist willing to accept the applicant as an Apprentice, and may not be enrolled as a full-time student during the period of the grant.

The Master Artist must provide evidence of the Master Artist’s own excellence in the traditional Alaska Native art form in which the grant applicant proposes to serve as an Apprentice; must provide evidence of recognition by members of the Master Artist’s cultural community for proficiency and skill in the traditional Alaska Native art form in which the grant applicant proposes to serve as an Apprentice; must agree to accept the grant application as an Apprentice; must be at least 18 years of age; and must be a resident of the State, per state rules and regulations.
