]]> The summer of 2012 will mark the third year of the Voices of the Wilderness artist residency.  It is modeled after residencies in the national parks…with a twist.  Instead of staying at a remote wilderness cabin, our participating artists are paired with a wilderness ranger and actively engaged in stewardship projects, such as research, monitoring, and education. The idea is to give artists a sense of the stewardship behind America’s public lands, fostering an artistic exploration of these natural and cultural treasures.

How to Apply:

The 2012 application will be available on March 1.  Artists must submit application materials and art samples exactly as indicated on the application form. Insufficient materials or incomplete application are causes for rejection, as are an artist’s proposed use of a work already in progress as a residency project.  All applications should be mailed to:
Voices of the Wilderness Program, Glacier Ranger District, PO Box 129 Girdwood, AK 99587

Applications must be postmarked on or before April 20, 2012.  Applications postmarked after the deadline will not be considered.  A panel of professional artists and Forest Service employees will select artists based on artistic merit, the Statement of Purpose, and appropriateness to a national forest residency. Selections will be made by mid May.
Samples of Artistic Work for application are as follows:
-Visual Artists: (i.e. Photographers, Sculptors, Painters) 6 color photos, minimum size of 5 x 7, as well as 1 CD with the same images in jpg or tif files of high enough quality to project on a screen.
-Writers: 6 pages of written examples (prose, short stories, plays or poetry), as well as an electronic version (doc file).
-Musicians/Composers: Musicians and composers must submit lyrics and 1 CD with recordings of their work.
-Multidiscipline Artists:  Send appropriate sample combinations based on the above

Moira will be coaching vocalists on finding their voice, vocalization and techniques in body percussion and improvisation. Moira Smiley has influenced a generation of young a cappella groups to study various folk harmony repertoires, performing in pursuit of each tradition’s unique vocal & performance demands and thus deepening their own creative culture of sound. She inspires young singers to use their voice as an instrument; a tool for composing, improvising and arranging.
