Empty Spaces: Studies in transparency and texture
October 2-30, 2015
A solo acrylic painting exhibit by Carnation, WA, artist Brian Sostrom.

Brian Sostrom’s images have been heavily inspired by nature. Some feature animals as the subject and others are desolate landscapes. He loves the imagery of nature but his focus more specifically is the paint itself. Sostrom creates paintings that have a great deal of physical presence, working with many layers of acrylic paint built up over a transparent acrylic substrate. The result is a dynamic shifting quality that varies with light and the angle of view. Sostrom has spent so many years working in the digital realm that part of his motivation is simply to create work that has an exciting physicality rather than the purely 2-dimensional qualities of print and screen. The surface has a very physical history that is intriguing to look at and hopefully helps create a sense of mystery and life.

Texture has been a component of painting since the first animals were sketched out on a rocky cave. Artists like Rembrandt created physical paintings with translucent deep shadows and the rough textural buildup of highlights that made him the master of chiaroscuro. Modern followers of his style like Odd Nerdrum have used the same approach with a more disturbing yet fascinating result. Van Gogh’s work had a frantic energy defined by the textures created by his brush strokes. The historical list of artists with beautifully textural work is a vast pool to draw from.
