El Dia de los Muertos Open Call Exhibit – Deadline: Oct. 2, 2017

El Dia de los Muertos
Open Call Exhibit at the Main Street Gallery

El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a holiday originating in Mexico and celebrated annually on November 1. Because of the belief that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, el Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with festivals and lively celebrations—food, drink, parties and activities the dead enjoyed in life. El Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, and on this holiday the dead are also a part of the community, ceremonially awakened from their eternal sleep to share in the celebration with their loved ones.

The most familiar symbol of el Dia de los Muertos may be the playful calacas and calaveras (skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and entertaining situations.

The Main Street Gallery’s El Dia de los Muertos exhibit, an open call exhibit for artists in both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional media, will be on exhibit to the public October 6-27, 2017. We invite YOU to be a part of the exhibit by playing with traditional themes, inventing your own tributes to mortality, or celebrating your loved ones, through artistic expression.
